Xi- Lambda Chapter History |
||||
The Xi-Lambda Chapter of Kappa Sigma was chartered on March 22, 1997, and thus became the first Kappa Sigma Chapter in the First State. Delaware was also the last of the lower 48 states to have a Chapter of Kappa Sigma within its boundaries.
The organization was begun in late March 1996, by ten students who were dissatisfied with their prior rush experiences, and had a desire to make a change. These ten searched for a fraternity with which to affiliate, and Kappa Sigma soon emerged as the fraternity of choice. Several phone calls were made, and soon Fraternity representatives were visiting the campus in preparation for a colonization. The formal colonization of Delaware Colony was conducted on April 30, 1996, by Chapter Consultants Bill Wilkinson and Anthony Epp. The ten students had surmounted the first obstacle in their path, and were soon on their way to the attainment of their goal: a Kappa Sigma Charter. Summer soon came, and five of the Colony members attended a Kappa Sigma Leadership Conference in Hofstra, New York. At this event, the members gained much insight as to their task at hand and learned many ways to achieve their goals. These five were reunited with the others in the Fall, however ten quickly became seven, as three members took their leave of the group soon into the school year. Despite their small size and the overwhelming odds against them, the students remained firm in their desire, and began Rush with unparalleled enthusiasm. Rush continued the entire semester, and by December the Colony counted thirty-two on its rolls. It was decided that Rush must end and the planning for the future must begin. The Colony broke for Winter Break with firm intentions of becoming chartered soon after their return to school. By the Spring semester, the Colony had matured to the level of a full-fledged chapter. Approval for the Charter was granted by the SEC in Dallas on February 1st. Preparations were begun in earnest for the installation, and on March 22, 1997, the Delaware Colony was chartered as the Xi-Lambda Chapter of Kappa Sigma. Twenty-five fine men, the founding fathers, were initiated this day by brothers from all over the Mid-Atlantic region. The Colony's Alumnus Advisor, Adam Apatoff, was essential to the achievement of the Charter and the continued success of the Chapter. The Chartering added new life to Xi-Lambda, and Brothers took a few weeks to reflect upon how far they had come and where they wanted to go in the future. Kappa Sigma is now firmly planted on the Delaware campus, and has earned a reputation as a leader in the campus community for now and for years to come. |
